Crosby Stills & Nash, MEN Arena, 10.07.09

Crosby & Nash - its always great to see these two guys together, and Crosby can still do a job on Almost Cut My Hair and Long Time Gone

Crosby Stills & Nash, MEN Arena, 10.07.09

I love Stepehen Stills, I bought all his solo stuff as well as all the CSN&Y. I once had tickets to a gig in Cardiff by his band Manassas, and when they cancelled I didn't bother to go to see the band they put on instead, which turned out to be Bob Marley & the Wailers, so I'm regretting that a bit now.

Crosby Stills & Nash, MEN Arena, 10.07.09

I first saw CSN (&Y) at Wembey Stadium in 1974. I doubt if i'd have beleievd that I'd be watching them in 2009, but here they are at the MEN last night, and they were fantastic. And I got Joe Vitale's drumstick!

North West Coast Aerial Survey

Sefton Council Technical Services Coastal Defence team have commissioned me to produce an aerial survey of the north-west coastline, from the Solway Firth on the Scottish border to the Great Orme on the North Wales coast, taking in the river estuaries of the Esk, Eden, Wampool, Esk (Cumbria), Irt, Mite, Duddon, Leven, Gilpin, Lune, Wyre, Douglas, Ribble, Mersey, Dee, and Clwyd. The total length of open coast is 430km, and photographs are to be taken every 1000m. , showing coastline and defences, and intertidal features such as beaches, salt marsh and mud flats.

River estuaries are to be photographed every 200m, along both sides and will show the estuary bank and defences, and features such as salt marsh and mud flats. All photographs will be taken within one hour of low tide, requiring detailed planning around days when low tide occurs at a suitable time, plus calculations of flying time and other logistics. Weather also has to be factored in, unfortunately no amount of planning can influence this part of the job. Photography will be carried out in March 2009, and will be shot on the 24.5 mp Nikon D3x, which will produce highly detailed images.

For Sale on Ebay - my spare D3

I am selling one of my D3s as I have just acquired a D3X and sadly cannot justify keeping 3 bodies. This camera has been lovingly cared for in the 12 months I have owned it, and although used professionally, has never been dropped, mis-handled or abused in any way. When not being used, it lives in a hard Peli case, and has not been exposed to harsh environments, or allowed to get wet or dirty. It has mainly been used to shoot live events at Echo Arena Liverpool, which is the sort of work it is ideally suited for, producing superb results in some tricky lighting conditions - many examples of pictures produced by this fabulous camera can be viewed in the image galleries at Lightbox Photography.

The camera is unblemished, the only visible sign of use being some wear on the rubber underside where it has been attached to a monopod. It is in perfect working order, comes with updated firmware and custom Picture Controls from the Nikon web site, and is packaged in the original box, complete with all leads, charger, and Nikon Capture NX software which was bundled with the camera. I am also including a third-party spare battery. The sensor has never required wet cleaning, and has been kept dust-free by use of a hand blower only.

Please check my feedback - I have sold many pieces of photo equipment on Ebay, and every buyer has been 100% satisfied with their purchase - this item is no exception, you will not be disappointed. Everything you have read about the D3 is true, it is a fantastic camera which seems to work better the more difficult the situation.

Simon Kirwan Wins TUC Photo Competition With BT Convention Centre Liverpool Snap

Award-winning Liverpool photographer Simon Kirwan has been awarded first prize in the TUC Liverpool Working Lives photo competition, the TUC’s first element of their programme of events to mark Liverpool’s status as 2008 European Capital of Culture.

With 2008 being Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture, the TUC invited both amateur and professional photographers to display their own images of working life in the city. The panel judging the competition consisted of Alan Manning, Regional Secretary of the NW TUC, Anne Thornton, Arts-Coordinator at the NW TUC and Eddie Barford, Deputy Picture Editor at the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo, and member of the NUJ, whose Merseyside branch partly sponsored the competition. The photos were judged on the interpretation of the competition’s theme in terms of creativity, atmosphere, originality and impact and also on their composition, focus, lighting, use of colour and exposure.

Anne Thornton, Arts Co-ordinator at the NW TUC said: “We have been extremely impressed by the high standard of pictures submitted to our competition by professionals and amateurs alike. Liverpool’s workers have created a unique photographic record of Liverpool working lives and of how they see their city during 2008, Capital of Culture year. The exhibition will be an opportunity for the public to see the best of the photographs and will be a showcase for the photographers themselves.”

Alan Manning, the TUC’s North West Regional Secretary, said that the competition and the website were an enjoyable way of highlighting working life in Liverpool while the city is in the international spotlight.

He added: “We want to celebrate the contribution of working people to this city and its culture. We are kicking off with a project that is aimed at showing Liverpool at work that is created by Liverpool’s workers. At the end of the competition, we will have an exhibition that we will tour around the region, from the city centre through to Kirkby and Bootle. Liverpool workers will have created a unique photographic record of Liverpool working lives.’’

Normally photographing stars performing on stage like Ringo Starr, Torvill & Dean, Duran Duran, Westlife, Sugababes, Meat Loaf and Paul Simon, resident photographer at Echo Arena Liverpool and BT Convention Centre Liverpool, and NUJ member Simon Kirwan captured his prize-winning picture in the kitchens at an awards dinner at the BT Convention Centre, depicting a team of chefs preparing dinner for delegates. In 2000, Simon was named the Observer Outdoor Photographer of the Year, and as well as photographing live events like the Liverpool Summer Pops for ACC Liverpool, operators of Echo Arena Liverpool and BT Convention Centre Liverpool, is the author of a series of landscape and aerial photography books, and also produces corporate and event photography for a diverse range of clients all over Europe. In 2007, Simon worked on projects in Spain, Holland, Belgium, and Poland, as well as locations all over the UK.

Simon Kirwan is a member of the Association of Photographers, and alongside his event, aerial, architectural, lifestyle marketing, public relations, corporate and advertising photography, has travelled extensively in Europe, USA, Asia and Africa producing images for The Lightbox, one of the UK’s longest-established photography web sites, which houses a collection of over 10,000 travel images, and can be viewed at www.the-lightbox.com
